Here’s how to make an Earth costume for boy kid in 5 easy steps:
Now your child has a cool Planet Earth costume!
Today I will not debate on Earth being flat or round, but I’ll make a cool Earth costume for kids. Last April in my son’s school program on Earth Day my son wanted to dress up as his favorite planet, Planet Earth. I had only a day in hand to prepare the costume. I searched online to buy one, but No Luck! Finally, I dived into Google, Pinterest, and Instagram and came across a design that my son and I both loved. Today, I am going to share with you how I made a planet Earth costume for my boy kid with some few items that were available at home.
If your kids are planning to be planet Earth this Halloween then you can follow this tutorial to make a planet Earth costume for your boy or girl on a budget.
To make a DIY mother Earth costume you don’t need any exclusive materials or tools. I simply made them with my household items as my son was in a bit of a hurry. In order to make this planet Earth outfit you don’t need anything fancy — just basic supplies that you have at home or that are available in a local shop. Therefore, the first step in turning into planet Earth is to collect all the necessary stuff. You’ll need-
This will form the base of the Earth. I used two large circles for the front and back of the costume.
I used blue paint and green felt to make the oceans and continents on the Earth costume.
I used the cotton balls to make the cloud above the Earth.
You will need these essentials for cutting and assembling the costume.
To make the costume wearable, like a sandwich board.
I used glitters to add fun details to the costume.
By gathering these materials, you’re already halfway to creating an awesome Planet Earth costume for your child.

Now that you have all your materials ready, it’s time to start creating the Earth shape. This part is straightforward and fun.
I started with cutting out two large circles from the cardboard, you can use foam board as well. With these two circles I made the front and back of the Earth. I can’t give you the exact size of the circles as this will totally depend on your child’s height, but I aimed for circles that were large enough to cover my son’s torso.
You’ll need two circles—one for the front and one for the back of the costume. This will create a full 3D Earth effect when your child wears it.
After cutting the circles, I made sure to smooth out any rough edges with sandpaper to prevent any discomfort while wearing. If you don’t have any sandpaper around, then you can simply cut the harsh lines with a cutter.
At this stage, you’ve created the basic shape of the Earth, and it’s starting to take form. It’s a simple step, but it lays the foundation for the rest of the costume.
Now comes the fun part and best part that I loved most—designing the Earth! This step allows you to get creative and bring the planet to life.
I started by covering both circles with blue paint to represent the oceans of the Earth. If you’re using fabric, simply cut out large blue circles and glue them to the cardboard. If you’re using paint, cover the entire surface of both circles with blue paint and let it dry completely.
Once the blue base is ready, it’s time to add the continents. You can either cut out green shapes from fabric to represent the continents or paint them directly onto the blue surface. I used green felt to make the continents. My son helped me in this part. He drew and cut the continents’ shapes. Don’t worry about getting the shapes perfect—this is a fun, creative project, so just focus on making it look like Earth.
To make the costume more vibrant, you can add extra details like clouds or glitter. I used cotton balls for making clouds and used glitter to make the Earth sparkle. Let your child help with this part—it’s a great way to get them involved and excited about the costume.
When you design something with care and creativity, you can turn a simple cardboard circle into a beautiful, recognizable Planet Earth costume!
After completing the costume, the next thing you have to do is make the costume wearable. Whenever I make any costume for my kids I always want to make sure that they feel comfortable in those costumes. This time I also wanted to make sure that my son feels comfortable and can move easily in his Planet Earth costume.
To make the costume wearable like a sandwich board I attached elastic straps to the top of both circles. The straps should go over your child’s shoulders, holding the front and back pieces in place. Measure the straps to make sure they fit snugly but comfortably.
Once the straps were attached, I had my little one try on the costume. The costume was a little bit loose so I adjusted the straps as needed to ensure a good fit. The costume should rest comfortably on your kids shoulders and allow them to move freely.
I used a strong glue to securely attach the straps to the cardboard. I double-checked that the straps were well-secured to prevent any mishaps while my son is wearing the costume.
This step is all about making the costume functional and ensuring your child can wear it with ease.
Finally, it’s time to add some final touches to the costume. If you add some small details it will make the costume extraordinary. You can follow these steps to take the costume to the next level.
Once I finished the costume, my son wanted to make it look like it was floating in space. So, I attached some stars on it. Not gonna lie, it also gave the costume a cosmic feel. First, I drawed some stars on yellow paper and cut them out. Then I glued them onto the costume. You can also add spaceships or rockets if you feel so.
Finally, I also made a cloud hat to complete the costume. I used a headband and cotton balls to make the cloud hat. You can also use paper mache to make a moon hat or a simple space helmet. I made a cloud hat because they are even more eye catchy.

While making the costume encourages your child’s creativity. I let my son add his own ideas and decorations to the costume no matter how basic they are. This makes the project more personal and fun for us.
Making a Planet Earth costume for my kiddo was a fun experience. Every step was fun and creative. My kids and I had fun from cutting out the shape to adding the finishing touches. The best part was my son helped me a lot throughout the work. He was very excited to wear the costume. I must say we spent a quality time together. Plus, it was a budget-friendly project. I easily made it with simple materials and it didn’t take lots of time.
I can say with confidence that it’s worth the effort. Not only did my son love his costume, but he was also curious about the planet and the importance of caring for the Earth. While making the costume I told him how important it is to build a green world and how we can work together to make our habits eco-friendly.
